Artisan Workwear Chore Jacket Indigo Blue

The Artisan takes its cues from traditional Chinese workwear, with cloth knot fastenings, a soft rounded collar and an easy shape designed for layering. Cut from 300gsm cotton canvas and dyed in true indigo, it's vintage washed to soften the cloth from the outset and begin the fading process.

The Chinese work jacket has been made in much the same way for generations, worn by farmers, tradesmen and artisans who needed something hard-wearing that could be repaired rather than replaced. Where European workwear reached for metal buttons and rivets, this tradition kept everything in cloth and thread, and built garments that were expected to change with use.

Unlike the heavier, stiffer versions of the original, the Artisan is cut in a softer canvas that's comfortable from the first wear, with a relaxed shape and room through the body for layering underneath. Two different canvas textures run through the jacket: a smoother cloth through the body and a coarser, lighter canvas at the pockets, cuffs and elbow patches. As the indigo wears, those contrasts will only become more pronounced.

We've kept the details that define the original. The cloth knot fastenings, the rounded collar, the patch pockets front and back, and sashiko stitching to reinforce the elbows and finish the binding.

Please note: Indigo dye is naturally less colour-fast, which helps create the fades that develop with wear. Avoid contact with lighter-coloured clothing and upholstery, as some colour transfer may occur. If transfer does happen, it should wash out with your usual detergent.
