Rich and hardy, warm and reliable, a hard-working fabric that feels soft to touch

Origins

Corduroy dates back to ancient Egypt, where it was woven close to the capital city of Al-Fustat and known as Fustian. Fustian didn’t carry the same raised textures as the corduroy we know today but was still seen as a hardwearing fabric for manual work. The corduroy we know today originated in Manchester in the 19th century and was used as factory wear. Even today, in parts of Europe, Corduroy is known as ‘Manchester’.

As with most hard-wearing fabrics, it was later adopted by the military and seen in many of the service uniforms before being revived in the 1960s largely due to its popularity with The Beatles and other bands.
Famously worn by artists and musicians during the 70s it become a symbol of anti-establishment and was loved by Bob Dylan, Woody Allen and Pablo Picasso.
